The Egyptian government is stepping up efforts to expand poultry exports by opening new markets across the Arab world and Africa, aiming to ease mounting financial losses in the poultry sector caused by declining domestic prices and oversupply. Industry leaders continue to attribute part of the weakening demand to the growing popularity of the “Al-Tayyibat” (The good things) dietary system.<\/p>\n
During a meeting with the General Union of Poultry Producers, Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Alaa Farouk reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting both small-scale farmers and large poultry producers. He announced plans to open new export markets in Arab, African, and international destinations, while also introducing easier financing mechanisms to strengthen the sector.<\/p>\n
The minister described the poultry industry as a cornerstone of Egypt’s food security and national economy, highlighting its significant production growth over the past year.<\/p>\n
According to official figures, Egypt’s broiler production reached approximately 1.6 billion birds, representing a 14% increase compared with the previous year. Table egg production climbed to 16.5 billion eggs, also up by more than 14%, while native chicken production rose 12.5% to 360 million birds.<\/p>\n
Although Egyptian poultry exports were largely suspended for nearly two decades, the country has recently resumed exports to several Arab markets, particularly Qatar, while negotiations are underway to access Iraq and a number of African countries, according to Mahmoud El-Anany, Chairman of the General Union of Poultry Producers.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, industry representatives argue that the widespread adoption of the “Al-Tayyibat” diet has contributed to lower poultry consumption. Abdel Aziz El-Sayed, Head of the Poultry Division at the Federation of Egyptian Chambers of Commerce, stated that farm-gate poultry prices have fallen to around EGP 65\/kg, well below the estimated break-even price of EGP 75\/kg, warning that continued low prices could force many producers out of business.<\/p>\n
The “Al-Tayyibat” diet, developed by the late physician Diaa Al-Awadhi, encourages the consumption of certain foods while discouraging others, including white poultry meat, eggs, and milk. The diet has gained considerable attention in recent months, sparking widespread debate over its potential impact on Egypt’s poultry industry.<\/p>\n
Farid Wasel, Deputy Chairman of the Agriculture and Irrigation Committee in Egypt’s House of Representatives, acknowledged that the poultry sector has been suffering significant losses due to increased production coinciding with weaker consumer demand. He described expanding exports as an important solution for absorbing excess production but stressed that domestic market needs must remain the priority before directing surplus supplies abroad.<\/p>\n
He also noted that poultry remains Egypt’s most affordable source of animal protein, especially as high red meat prices and limited fish self-sufficiency leave consumers with few economical alternatives.<\/p>\n
According to statistics from the Poultry Division of the Cairo Chamber of Commerce, broiler prices have declined by approximately 25% since early June, while table egg prices have fallen by around 40% during the same period, coinciding with intensified public discussion surrounding the “Al-Tayyibat” diet.<\/p>\n
Egypt’s poultry industry employs approximately 3.5 million people, directly and indirectly, and represents investments valued at nearly EGP 200 billion, making it one of the country’s most important agricultural sectors.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
