Mauritania’s Ministry of Animal Development announced the launch of a national artificial insemination campaign targeting dairy cows in the Hodh Ech Chargui region, as part of a government plan to improve breeds and boost livestock productivity.
The campaign was inaugurated in the city of Néma by Minister Mokhtar Ould Gaghe, in an official ceremony attended by local officials, representatives of beneficiary cooperatives, and Mohamed Baba Gueye, Director General of the National Office for Livestock Research and Development and the Pastoral System.
The program aims to inseminate around 1,250 cows, with 50 cows per cooperative, in what authorities describe as a key step toward developing the region’s so-called “Milk Basin” as a local source of dairy production.
Through this initiative, the Mauritanian government seeks to strengthen self-sufficiency in the dairy sector, which represents a vital source of livelihood for a large portion of the population, while contributing to broader efforts to enhance national food security.
